Pros and Cons of using a knife as a prop ( Contextual research)
Pro - Using a knife in my short film would be very effective and more believable to the audience that an actual weapon is being used , its more convincing if a knife is being used and plus it doesn't have to be an actual knife it could be an actual prop something that looks realistic enough for the audience to believe , with the knife actually being there it would make it more realistic for the actors to actually bring that particular scene to life , because the knife is actually there so it brings the scene to full effect If we use a prop knife there wouldn't be any physical contact made because it would simply be a prop but it would appear to the audience as a real knife.
Con - Using a knife as prop could be classified to some people as very dangerous because when filming it could draw a lot of attention , which could result in being the police and the public thinking there is an actual altercation happening , which could possibly get me into serious trouble , because its against the law to be in possession with a knife so it may be a really bad idea to have a knife when filming. If I was to film with an actual knife it could lead to someone getting seriously hurt because the scene could go horribly wrong which is something I cannot afford to happen because of danger .
Another pro - Using a prop knife would lead to nobody getting hurt because its simply just a prop , if I was to use this particular prop it would just be more interactive between both actors , and with a prop if someone was to approach us while filming then we could just example its a prop and we are just filming , and for example if the police show up we can again just show them that it is just a prop and we aren't using anything that is of real essence or of any danger to the people in the area at all.
Another Con - Even by using a prop as a weapon ( knife) it still may draw a lot of unwanted attention to the scene and that's not what I want because I want to be given that chance to film without any distractions or any altercations , for example if someone screams " knife" it will create a lot of panic and that's not the type of attention I want in this case and because I will be filming quite a lot of takes I need continuity but if there is constant distractions happening every time we are trying to film a particular scene then I truly wont get anything done at all which will be quite unfortunate.
Overall I believe that there are equal factors and strong arguments on both sides but I believe to achieve the highest grade I should take risks but maybe I shouldn't use a real knife in this case because it may lead to a lot of trouble but if I use a prop knife there will be a 0 chance anyone would get physically hurt and there wouldn't be any serious altercations actually happening , just because the weapon is fake doesn't mean there wouldn't be an act of realism to the short film , everything will be quite believable because I can always edit the sound it make the audience believe what was used was very real and that it will gradually build tension .
In this particular case I will be using a knife because I think it will being my character to life dramatically and it will intensify the scene dramatically , if I was to take the whole idea of using a knife or prop knife , I wouldn't show the audience the knife , I would make them believe it is there by playing around with a lot of angles and making it look likes something is there but it really isn't there because I will just show the movement and how it is placed and how the other person wounded the other character and I could gradually create my own sound effects as if he pierced the other characters inside quite brutally , just the sound alone will make the audience believe and feel .
