Reflection ( on Audio interference) 5th may
This is a brief reflection about some of the audio and dialogue problems I face during my filming , I have explained that I have face a few problems along the way for example I struggled with recording the audio in the first place , which resulted in a lot of messed up recordings because it was either because the microphone wasn't on or we had trouble actually working the microphone , I even couldn't operate the camera at one point.
My short film required music to be placed over the top of the footage to make it sound good but at first I put a song that was by a well known artist and if I was to publish this short film on another platform I would face quite a lot of copyright inflictions which could result in my short film being taken down which is something I do not want , as well as YouTube if I was to enter my short film in a competition there may be a few rules against me using other people's music in my short film it is basically me claiming that I own the rights to the song playing in the background , but I don't so that was a situation that I came across , but there was an easy solution to this problem I just had to search non copyrighted instrumental music on YouTube and use that as a replace in my short film because that way I wouldn't face any future problems when it came to the musical side of the short film.
Another challenge that I faced was that I had a few audio complications in terms of the boom microphone picking up the dialogue and speech that was being said it was also picking up a lot of other noises such as passing cars , droplets of the rain because in this case I chose a day that the weather wasn't exactly the best we had to film in a extreme whether condition but beside that the audio wasn't the best in some cases because other sounds were getting into the dialogue and when I was playing the whole short film back to my focus group , one of the major points they gave me was to fix the audio so they could be able to hear it better because if the characters are speaking its ideal for the audience to hear what they are saying because otherwise the scene wouldn't make sense . So the solution for this problem was too either re record the scenes again but in a much quieter place so that you can purely hear the dialogue and so everything is more intact and more efficient , but because of the schedule of my actor I have been unable to record the scenes I need to redo do the fact I thought I shot everything perfectly but when I was recording I played back what I recorded , just in that moment I couldn't exactly hear the car interference which was definitely a con because when it came to editing it was defiantly a serious problem because even the different takes I did had the same problem fro example if that was the sound levels , or the actual quality of the sound , nothing was generally wrong with the filming , just the frequency of the sound , but I think the easier option for me would be to record the audio and put it over the footage because that will save a lot of time for me as the director and as the actor because when I filmed the whole short film it took about 4 hours going on 5 hours to film which is quite time consuming , but in future I should consider when filming outside that I should in a more quieter place because the sound levels won't always be even .
When recording the footage and audio we had to always make sure the microphone was actually on because if the microphone was attached to the camera so it was my job as the director to make sure the microphone was actually on , but there was one scene when the microphone wasn't actually on which was relatively a problem because we could just film another take which wasn't a huge problem but it still was unfortunate because it was quite a good take . One major thing happened with the microphone were it wouldn't screw back onto the camera which happened at the worst possible time because we were half way threw filming and we had know back up microphone the only option was too film using the camera and let the camera naturally pick up the dialogue and hope that when it came to editing there wouldn't be any major change or difference in levels because it would be a real shame if the audio levels were seriously different but again it wasn't a major issue because I edited the sound so that the sound levels were exactly the same , but when I did my focus group they still picked up on the sound levels , so there is a possibility I might have to edit the sound further , because I could tell that my focus group picked up a change in sound , sound is definitely major factor with this short film because its very important that it must be completely perfect .
In conclusion I really struggled when it came to audio and dialogue because I am not skilled in that area because I am usually a visual person , so when it came to shooting this short film with dialogue ait was purely experimental at first because I didn't know whether using audio was really the best choice because of the simple fact that it would of been the safer option to just use simple easy visuals so I could singly incorporate angles and shots and frames in the short film but overall I am glad that I used audio because even with all the challenges that I face the audio ended up working in the end .
The technical side of the audio I doubled clicked the audio file and then I spilt the audio file into two parts by dragging the two files and pulling them a part , after that I just lowered the background noise so you could hear the actor a little better , and that worked out much better because it was less of the cars more of the talking .
